Eating and Driving: The Truck Driver’s Dilemma

Virginia motorists who have taken day-long rides know how boring and tiring driving can be, especially when the traffic is dense and slow. Munching on an energy bar or sipping coffee can help pass time and rejuvenate the driver.

Whether driving with the family to a seaside resort or going to a distant business meeting, car drivers know that everything will be fine until around midday. Driving tends to become far more difficult after lunch. Food digestion is indeed a powerful sleep inducer, particularly if you are stuck behind the wheel, unable to exercise, or lacking intellectual and physical activity.

How are truck drivers supposed to fight drowsiness?

Many truck drivers spend their days stuck in traffic. Truck driver fatigue is responsible for a significant number of large truck crash fatalities and injuries. Warning signs of fatigue can include:
  • Blinking and yawning frequently;
  • Eyes closing and going out of focus;
  • Head sagging;
  • Unconsciously slowing down speed;
  • Slow reactions;
  • Drifting out of the lane.
If digestion induces drowsiness, then digesting a heavy meal and fast food makes things even worse. Truck drivers, like any driver on a long haul, are encouraged to make regular stops to exercise and stretch, eat light meals and fruits during the day, drink water regularly, and avoid soft drinks. A 20 minute nap goes a long way towards restoring energy levels.
