Most of us are used to doing several things at once. We make dinner while we talk on the phone, we pay our bills while we help our children with homework, we text or check our email while we do...just about everything. Expectation dictates that we be always available and always ready to multitask.

Sometimes multitasking is unavoidable, and you may need to do two (or more) things at once in order to keep your job and manage your family. However, sometimes you have to take control and avoid multitasking.

Just Say No While You Are Behind the Wheel

You can decide to make 2013 the year that you stop multitasking while driving. You can recognize that driving requires your complete and total attention, and that doing anything other than driving can be dangerous for you and others. You can make a change.

Specifically, you can:

  • Let your boss know that you will not take calls, answer texts, or respond to emails while you are driving.
  • Make sure that you do not have paper and pen, or a cell phone, accessible.
  • Schedule your meals and snacks for when you are not driving.
  • Make sure that you are not over-scheduled and that you have enough time to drive from one location to the next without needing to take a call or respond to an email.
  • Pull over if there is something you need to take care of before you reach your destination.

This list is far from exhaustive. You can do many other things to stay safe. Overall, anything that takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the steering wheel, or your concentration off surrounding traffic should be avoided while driving.
