Most of us have heard of the various common driving dangers. There is distracted driving, drunk driving, and reckless driving, but have you ever considered the perils of drugged driving? A recent study focused on this very issue.

Although marijuana is generally considered illegal, it is one of the most commonly consumed illicit drugs of today. While debate rages about whether it should be legalized or not, questions have continued regarding the dangers of driving under the influence of marijuana. A recent study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) delved right into these risks. Researchers studied a total of 49,411 car crash victims and discovered some interesting information.

Driving after Smoking Pot Increases Car Accident Risk

According to the BMJ study, consuming marijuana within 3 hours of driving nearly doubles the risk of a car accident. They found that the risks are even greater in fatal collisions.

As the researchers analyzed their data, they made sure to exclude accidents which also involved alcohol. Drunk driving is already a well-known and publicized danger. Law enforcement can easily measure the blood alcohol content levels of drivers, which is used to determine intoxication. However, drugged driving, such as when a motorist gets behind the wheel after smoking pot, is a little more difficult to control.

Determining the amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is found in marijuana, that would make a driver impaired, is a challenge. According to BMJ researchers, more information is needed to make this determination. Also, as it stands, law enforcement has very limited tools to address this driving danger.
