This month Virginia State Police officers presented a Virginia couple with a certificate and a salute of praise for buckling up – an act that probably saved their lives. In March, the couple was involved in a serious accident that could have killed them both, had they not been wearing their seatbelts. The accident investigator was quoted as saying, “we’re talking a T-bone collision at 55 miles per hour. Wearing seat belts kept them from getting seriously injured or killed.”
The presentation was part of Virginia’s current “Click It or Ticket” program, going on right now in an effort to educate motorists about the importance of buckling up, and enforce the message with fines and warnings. In Virginia, 43% of last year’s auto accident fatality victims were not wearing seatbelts, and this is a statistic that both federal and state officials want to do something about.
Click It or Ticket for Safety
Every year the NHTSA sponsors the “Click It or Ticket” (CIOT) program in an effort to spread the word to American motorists that not only are seatbelts mandatory, but they save lives. CIOT is one of NHTSA’s most important programs, and has recently attempted to focus on high-risk groups like males age 18 to 34, teenagers, and night-time drivers – all of whom are less likely to buckle up when they get in their vehicles
Research has revealed that the use of lap and shoulder seat belts reduces the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent. The statistics are even better for light-truck occupants, as they can reduce their risk of fatal injury by 60 percent and moderate-to-critical injury by 65 percent just by wearing their seatbelt. These compelling statistics are why occupant safety programs like Click It or Ticket are so important to law enforcement officials.
Who Isn’t Wearing Their Seatbelt?
A recent report on traffic safety facts by NHTSA revealed the following information about what kind of vehicle occupants are neglecting to wear their seatbelts, and when. Across the board, the number and percentage of unrestrained vehicular deaths were much higher during nighttime. In addition:
Remember the lesson of the Virginia couple whose lives were saved because they took the time to put on their seatbelts. You won’t get a thank you or award from the State Police each time you put on your seatbelt, but buckling up every time you get into a car – no matter if you are the driver or a passenger – is the best way to stay safe on our roadways.
