Virginians urged to stay alert and safe in road work zones

Work zones on Virginia roads and highways aren’t just a nuisance to hurried drivers, they are necessary to keep our roads safe and in good repair – but they can also be very dangerous. It isn’t just workers in these zones who are in danger of being seriously injured or killed in a traffic accident; it is drivers and their passengers as well. The statistics may surprise many people. It turns out that 85% of those killed in work zones are motor vehicle drivers and their passengers.

To spread the word about the importance of safe driving near work zones, several agencies have banded together to promote the tenth annual National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW). The message for motorists is “Drive to Survive – Our Future is Riding on It!” NWZAW runs from April 6 to 10, 2009 and the message is an important one any time of the year. Too many road workers and motorists die preventable deaths or are seriously injured in work zone accidents every year. This week of awareness, started in 1999, will include education efforts like billboards, a national media campaign, public service announcements and outreach to high-school students.

NWZAW is supported by a number of organizations, including State transportation departments, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), American Road and Transportation Builders Association, Associated General Contractors of America, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). These organizations hope that they can reduce the 1,000 work zone deaths and over 40,000 work zone injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes every year.

Virginia support for work zone accident prevention

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is also getting in on the act along with the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA). Virginia saw seven work zone deaths on state-maintained roads in 2008, and numerous more injuries. VDOT hopes to impress on drivers that roadway workers have families, friends, and colleagues depending on them to return home safely every day, and their safety depends on all of us behind the wheel.

A few simple rules are offered to drivers traveling through work zones:

  • Drive slowly
  • Stay alert for changing conditions
  • Avoid distractions (i.e. text messaging or talking on the phone)
