Breaking News for Culpeper and Warrenton Accident Victims

Assisted living advice for Fauquier residents

Posted on Jan 31, 2011

The hardships of winter sometimes cause Virginia families to consider assisted living facilities or nursing homes for their elderly or infirm loved ones.  When weather conditions make it hard to visit older relatives, and when inclement weather and severe cold create hazardous conditions for these individuals, the reassurance offered by a full-staffed facility may seem appealing.

If you are considering an assisted living or nursing home for your family member, here are some things to keep in mind from the folks at Fauquier Health.

Would your family member benefit by moving to an assisted living facility?  They might, if:

  • They are having a more difficult time taking care of themselves
  • They are struggling with personal hygiene
  • They are having trouble making their own meals
  • They aren’t paying all their bills on time
  • They only spend time in a few rooms of their home
  • They are isolating themselves or seem to be depressed

It can be difficult for elderly or infirm individuals to grow old and gradually become unable to care for themselves.  This loss of independence can be a blow to their psyche, but caring, compassionate family members can help.  Elderly family members may resist the move to an assisted living facility, but they may find that having the burden of meal preparation and other care tasks taken on by somebody else a relief.  Many facilities and nursing homes have social programs and activities for seniors to keep them busy, happy and engaged in their community.
