U.S. Route 29 was the scene of a messy accident when a tractor trailer containing beer crashed. There were no injuries in the wreck, however northbound traffic on 29 was slowed for several hours.
The accident happened just before 8 o’clock in the morning, when an 18-wheeler stopped on the side of the road was struck by another tractor trailer. The driver of the stopped truck, David Anthony Jiardina, 54, from Texas, had stopped to deal with a non-mechanical problem. However, he did not pull his rig off the road completely; his trailer was partially in the road.
The other tractor trailer driver, Billy Henderson Oliver, 46, of Danville Virginia, claimed he could not miss the trailer. His vision was obscured by the bright sun and there were cars in the lane to his left. As a result, Oliver hit the left rear corner of the stopped trailer.
This caused Oliver’s truck, which was carrying the beer, to crash through the right-side guardrail and fall 20 feet down an embankment. Fortunately he was pulled from his cab by witnesses and was not injured in the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the tractor-trailer wreck.
An officer with the Virginia State Police witnessed the crash. The first driver, Jiardina, was charged with improper stopping on the highway.
