Breaking News for Culpeper and Warrenton Accident Victims

Bicyclist struck by hit-and-run driver in Rixeyville area

Posted on Oct 27, 2010

A car driver struck a bicyclist in the Rixeyville area and immediately left the scene of the accident.  Kip DeSerres was visiting from Maine, walking his bike along Route 229 when he was hit.

DeSerres claims that he was walking his bike on Rt 229 because the road seemed very narrow.  His bike was on the grass, he stated, and he was on the grass side of the white road line.  He felt the impact from the crash on his lower back, at which point he fell into a ditch by the side of the road.

The vehicle involved in the crash could only be described by DeSerres and those who stopped to help him as a late model (late 1980s or early 1990s) American luxury sedan.  Witnesses believe that the vehicle’s mirror struck DeSerres, injuring his leg.  It may be difficult to find the vehicle, if the only damage it sustained was to the mirror.

Police investigators did find a right-side chrome electric car mirror at the scene of the accident, so the hit-and-run vehicle is likely without a mirror.  DeSerres is offering a $1,000 reward for any information related to the incident.

The impact broke DeSerres’ left shin, and he had to be treated at Culpeper Regional Hospital.  He is expected to recover.  Fortunately for DeSerres, his mother and brother live in Culpeper County, so he was able to be with them after the wreck.
