Acting on complaints from residents and
observations from officers, the Culpeper Police Department will begin
enhanced enforcement of crosswalk laws, the department announced this
week.
Sgt. Jason Deal said police will direct their focus to crosswalks on
North Main Street from Edmondson Street north of the County
Administration Building south to Locust Street, which is south of the
post office.
“It is important for drivers to know that once a pedestrian is in a
crosswalk, they have to yield the right of way,” Deal said. Drivers of
vehicles entering, crossing or turning at intersections must also slow
down or stop to allow pedestrians to cross safely, according to
Virginia law.
