At about 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2011, a northbound Honda Accord on U.S. 15 crossed the median and hit the front corner of an oncoming 2007 International semi-truck, which was hauling drywall. The crash happened about a mile north of the Culpeper - Orange county line.
The Honda driver, Kristie Jo Fincham, 24, of Culpeper, was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center, StarExponent.com reports.
The truck driver, Randy Lee Mararaci, 50, of Mount Airy, NC, was transported to Culpeper Regional Hospital. Virginia State Police Trooper J.A. Taylor is handling the investigation.
A more recent StarExponent.com report says that Fincham's condition was downgraded from serious to critical. Meanwhile, Fincham faces charges of driving under the influence of drugs.
With a growing number of drivers getting behind the wheel impaired by illegal and prescription drugs, law enforcement authorities say that cracking down on drugged driving has become a crucial issue.
Drug-impaired driving is far more prevalent than ten years ago, and the worrying trend comes at a time when drunk driving violations are getting under control thanks to strict enforcement and education campaigns.
Statistics are not readily available to monitor the extent and evolution of the problem. One cause is that the phenomenon is relatively new, while another is that there are no standard procedures in place in all 50 states and there is no agreement on what should be measured and how.
