Breaking News for Culpeper and Warrenton Accident Victims

Culpeper Police Plan Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Awareness Campaign

Posted on Oct 04, 2011

The week of September 11-17 is Virginia's Third Annual Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Week, during which police will pay special attention to pedestrian crosswalks. Strategically placed electronic message boards will alert motorists to yield to pedestrians as required by law, the Star Exponent reports.

Culpeper Police Chief Chris Jenkins says that pedestrians have a right of way in crosswalks and motorists need to pay attention and stop.

In 2010, 88 people were killed walking or cycling on Virginia's roadways while another 621 cyclists and 1,858 pedestrians were injured.

Drive Smart Virginia and BikeWalk Virginia join the campaign to increase awareness and improve understanding of the risks of fatalities and injuries. Culpeper police will offer free bike helmets as part of the campaign.

"It's smart to ride a bike with protective headgear." said Sgt. Andy Berry. "An accident can happen without notice and the helmet may help avoid serious head injury should the rider fall off the bike."
Police want bicyclists to understand the rules: obey traffic laws, stop at stop signs and traffic lights, and ride with the flow of traffic.

Walking and bicycling are healthy and enjoyable exercises and should remain so. Unfortunately, inattentive motorists often consider the road to be theirs and do not pay sufficient attention to the vulnerable human beings who have a right to moving around in safety.
