Travelling south on Route 229, a 1989 GMC dump truck pulling a trailer recently had its path blocked by a dark SUV that pulled out at the intersection with Route 630. Trying to avoid an accident, the truck driver jackknifed and crashed into a fence. The SUV continued on Route 229, and the Virginia State Police continues to investigate the incident.
Damage to the property and the truck was estimated at $10,000 combined. The truck driver was not hurt.
Hopefully, the truck driver and property owner will not have to foot the bill. They will have to depend on the police and witness reports in the hopes of recovering damages from their insurers. After all, the crash was the result of the truck driver's quick reaction to avoid hurting the SUV occupants. It is sad to note that even though a car-on-car accident was averted, the SUV driver who caused the incident preferred to make a cowardly run rather than face some minor charges.
Hit-and-run accidents happen all the time, often spelling disaster for the innocent victim. Virginia insurance contracts are required to cover accidents with underinsured, non-insured, or hit-and-run motorists, but proving a hit-and-run crash can be tricky.
