The Virginia State Police (VSP) reported that a Company 2 Brandy Station fire truck crashed on Stevensburg Road on the morning of Friday, May 20, 2011. The fire truck had been riding with its lights and sirens activated on its way to a crash on Route 3.
According to StarExponent.com, the 50-year-old driver, Jeff Bailey, and three other firefighters were traveling southbound in a 1996 Pierce Saber fire truck when they met an approaching vehicle about seven tenths of a mile south of Route 666. Bailey apparently ran off the right side of the road to avoid hitting the vehicle. Overcorrecting to bring the truck back on the road, he lost control and flipped the truck onto the fields of Old House Vineyards. There was no contact between the two vehicles.
All firefighters were transported to Culpeper Regional Hospital and later released.
The original Route 3 wreck, near the Luck Stone entrance, was tended to by the VSP. No injuries were reported.
Emergency response and police vehicles are sometimes involved in crashes, as they must ride at high speeds, overtake vehicles, and cross intersections in often dangerous circumstances. The best way for motorists to avoid such accidents is to slow down immediately and pull over as soon as an approaching emergency vehicle is heard or seen. Getting out of the way is not only what you should do for your own safety, but also to allow the first response team to help people as quickly as possible.
