Breaking News for Culpeper and Warrenton Accident Victims

Former Culpeper resident dies in single car crash involving alcohol

Posted on Sep 27, 2010

A former resident of Culpeper who up until her death was living in Elkton died recently in a single vehicle crash.  Jennifer Ann Cottrell passed away at age 42 after losing control of her car in Rockingham County.

Cottrell was driving her 1994 Ford Fiesta when the accident occurred.  Virginia State Police believe that Cottrell lost control of her Fiesta while she was headed north on U.S. 340.  As a result she ran off the road, slid down an embankment, and crashed into a group of trees.

Police believe that Cottrell may have been intoxicated when she crashed.  She was also not wearing a seat belt when the accident happened, which may have contributed to her death.  The crash is still under investigation.

Sadly, Cottrell leaves behind three young daughters, an ex-husband, and other family members.  Cottrell may be familiar to Culpeper residents who enjoyed her sweet treats.  She had a business called “Dip Drizzle Dunk Sweets & Treats”.

This accident involved two common factors that contribute to fatal wrecks: alcohol and failure to buckle up.  Either one can be enough to lead to serious injury or death, but the slowed reaction time from being intoxicated combined with the lack of protection from a seat belt can be – as in this tragic case – deadly.
