It will be soon, due to a bill signed into law by Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, as reported by Vienna Patch.
If you ride a bicycle, a moped, or a motorcycle, you probably have experienced the frustration of waiting endlessly at an intersection, just because the sensors under the pavement can't detect your two-wheeler.
Most of the traffic signals today have an induction wire crossing the road to detect stopped vehicles. The sensors trigger a system, allowing the lights to change so that the stopped vehicles can move forward.
Two-wheelers often do not have the metallic mass to trigger the sensors, and, if no other vehicles pull up next to them, they can be stuck a long time waiting for the lights to change.
Under the new law, motorcyclists, moped riders, and bicyclists will be authorized to pass through red lights after waiting 120 seconds, or two cycles of the light, and making sure that no vehicle comes into the intersection.
Traffic going through green lights will always have the right of way, and, should there be an accident, the two-wheeler rider would have the same liability as if he had unlawfully crossed red lights or a stop sign.
The law will take effect July 1st.
