Breaking News for Culpeper and Warrenton Accident Victims

New rules will make cars safer in Virginia rollover accidents

Posted on Jan 29, 2011

What’s the most dangerous thing about a rollover accident in Virginia?  Being thrown from the vehicle.  That’s because once your body is outside the vehicle – either fully or partially – you are more likely to be injured by another vehicle or by a fixed object like a tree.

Rollover crashes continue to be one of the most deadly and dangerous types of wrecks for Virginia drivers.  However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is trying to do something about this.

The NHTSA recently issued a final rule, stating that by 2013 vehicle manufacturers must begin phasing in new technology that will prevent vehicle occupants from being thrown from the vehicle in the event of a crash.  The rule specifically states that countermeasures must be in place to prevent an unbelted adult (that is, an adult not wearing a seat belt) from moving more than 4 inches past the side window opening in a wreck.

This technology is expected to be available in some vehicles starting in 2013, with full implementation in ALL vehicles sold in the United States by 2018.  This rule is expected to save 373 lives each year, and prevent another 476 serious injuries.

The rule affects new light passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. market that weigh under 10,000 pounds.
