It is a well-known fact among law enforcement officers that holiday weekends are deadly weekends for Virginia drivers. As we approach the Christmas and New Year’s Eve / Day holidays, it is important to remember the importance of safe driving.
Unfortunately, over the last holiday weekend – Thanksgiving – nine people were killed in vehicle accidents across Virginia. According to information from the Virginia State Police, six of the victims were not wearing their seatbelts and one death was related to alcohol consumption.
The people who died ranged in age from 13 to 89. They came from counties across Virginia, including Orange, Rappahannock, Chesapeake, Albemarle, Hanover, Montgomery, Sussex and Hampton.
As tragic as nine deaths over Thanksgiving are for Virginia residents, this is an improvement over last year when sixteen people died on Virginia roads. While this is encouraging, the number of drunk driving arrests went up by 33 percent, resulting in 175 intoxicated drivers being taken off the roads. It is not known if this increase is due to more intoxicated drivers being on the road or more police enforcement of drunk driving laws.
Deaths and drunk driving weren’t the only issues this past Thanksgiving. Virginia State Police were also busy issuing 10,116 speeding tickets, 2,780 reckless driving citations, 831 citations for adults not wearing a seatbelt, and 253 other citations for improper child restraints (or no restraints at all).
