Breaking News for Culpeper and Warrenton Accident Victims

Road debris contributes to Elkwood motorcycle wreck

Posted on Sep 28, 2010

Motorcycle riders must remain constantly vigilant for road debris, as evidenced by a recent accident involving a Front Royal resident.  Tom A. von Eiff was heading north on U.S. 29 in Elkwood when he was involved in a crash.

The man, riding a 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, had to swerve to avoid a box spring that was in the road.  When he swerved, he crashed.  The incident occurred near the Berry Hill Road intersection in the early afternoon.

The motorcycle rider had to be airlifted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital to be treated for his injuries.  The hospital has not provided information about 55 year old von Eiff’s condition; it is not known if his injures are life-threatening or if he is expected to survive.

For his part in contributing to the accident William Smith, 63, was issued a ticked by a Virginia State Police trooper.  The Brady Station resident is accused of failing to secure his load.  The box spring fell from his 1996 Ford F150 truck, causing Von Eiff to crash.

This is another example of how important it is that drivers hauling goods in the back of their trucks or on their roofs take extra care to make sure their loads are secure before they hit the road.  It is also important to periodically check roof or truck bed loads during a trip, to ensure that items have not shifted or come loose in transport.
