Breaking News for Culpeper and Warrenton Accident Victims

Toyota recalling 2.17 million more vehicles for floor mat problems

Posted on Feb 28, 2011

The Toyota Motor Corporation is in the news for recalls again, and for the same problem that plagued them before: floor mats.  This time they are recalling 2.17 million vehicles in the U.S. because they still have concerns about accelerator pedals becoming entrapped in the floor mats or getting caught under the driver’s side carpeting.

The recall comes after the U.S. Department of Transportation reviewed over 400,000 pages of documents from Toyota to determine if the previous recalls went far enough.  As a result of their investigation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked that Toyota recall additional vehicles.  When Toyota agreed, NHTSA closed the investigation.

This recent recall brings the number of recalled Toyota vehicles up to 14 million across the world, a record-breaking number.  Toyota has face accusations that floor mat and electronic flaws have caused accidents and deaths.  While the floor mat and accelerator pedals are believed to be a problem, U.S. regulators have cleared Toyota of having electronic problems that contributed to unintended acceleration.

The recall includes:

  • 600,000 4Runner SUVs ( 2003-2009 model years)
  • 761,000 RAV4 compact SUVs (2006-2010 model years)
  • 17,000 Lexus LX 570s ( 2008-2011 model years)
  • 372,000 RX 330, RX 350 and RX 400H vehicles ( 2004 through early 2007 model years)
  • 397,000 2004-2006 Toyota Highlander SUVs and hybrid versions
  • 20,000 2006 through early 2007 GS 300 and GS 350 all-wheel drive vehicles
