This time of year there are plenty of things for Culpeper motorists to worry about. These worries include fog, which can reduce visibility and contribute to accidents; and deer, which can dart out in front of cars also leading to serious wrecks.
Two recent wrecks on U.S. 29 near Hoover Road were to blame on deer and fog. The accidents made life difficult for local residents, causing power outages in Madison County and a nearly two-hour traffic backup.
According to the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, the first accident happened when a driver from Pennsylvania headed north on 29 allegedly swerved to miss a deer and hit a utility pole. The force of the impact caused her car to catch fire, and the impact with the pole caused local homes to lose power. The woman was able to escape the burning vehicle with the help of another driver.
The woman was taken to Culpeper Regional Hospital to be treated for her injuries, which were described as moderate. Her name is not known as she was not charged in the wreck. The accident caused the northbound lanes of 29 to be closed.
The second accident happened about an hour later when a 2001 Volvo tractor trailer tried to make a U-turn on 29 to free his truck from a ditch. During the maneuver the truck was hit by a 1989 Mack truck. Virginia State Police did not file charges, claiming that fog was a factor in the accident.
