wo sisters were killed near Crimora on Tuesday
when a sport utility vehicle slammed into their car after they passed a
stop sign without slowing down, police said.
Wanda Virginia Stambaugh, 63, of Fredericksburg, was driving a gray
2007 Toyota Corolla west on Route 612 at around 35 mph when she passed
the stop sign and proceeded onto Route 340, where the vehicle was
broadsided by a southbound blue 1999 Ford Explorer, Virginia State
Police Sgt. David Cooper said.
Stambaugh’s sister, Barbara Jean Trent, 64, of Gauley Bridge, W.Va., was riding in the passenger seat, Cooper said.
The force of the collision sent both vehicles spinning over a
curb-lined flowerbed and into the parking lot of Mike’s Tire and Auto,
an adjacent gas station and repair shop. The Corolla smashed into a
parked 1992 Buick LeSabre before coming to a halt.
