Breaking News for Culpeper and Warrenton Accident Victims

Virginia Man Pleads Guilty to DUI Manslaughter

Posted on Apr 21, 2011

When Curtis William Riley turned off Route 608 in Stuarts Draft near Staunton, he drove his 1988 Dodge Ram into the path of Dale Scott Callison on his Harley-Davidson Roadster motorcycle, killing him instantly.

This occurred last year, and the tragic fate of Callison was heard again last week in the Augusta County Circuit Court as the victim's widow, two witnesses, a doctor, and two Virginia State Police troopers took the stand.

According to an article in The News Virginian, the witnesses arriving on the scene first saw Riley walking around and waving his arms, staggering. Troopers found him later hiding in a stairwell.

Authorities said that Riley had been driving on a suspended license. Blood testing turned up a 0.31 percent blood-alcohol level, nearly four times the legal limit.

Riley pleaded guilty to manslaughter, failure to stop at the scene of a crime, driving on a suspended license, and possession of methamphetamine. Sentencing is scheduled for July 28, 2011.

Dave Scott Callison, of Barterbrook Road, was 55 when he died.
