According to US Department of Transportation, motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to experience a deadly accident on the road than other drivers.  Head injury is the leading cause of death, and the failure to wear a helmet causes one to be 40% more likely to die on the road.  11% of all roadway accidents involve motorcyclists.  Further, almost half of all motorcycle accidents involve another vehicle turning left while the motorcycle was going straight or passing that vehicle.  Obviously, riders can protect themselves to the best extent possible by wearing a helmet and driving responsibly.  However, it's difficult to overcome other drivers' tendencies simply not to see motorcycles on the road. Undoubtedly, this problem is made worse by distractions such as texting and cell phones.
